How to install a GFCI Outlet

Follow below steps to install a GFCI Outlet/ Receptacle:

1. Please check for GFCI protection at your home

In most states of America, building codes are now requiring GFCI plugs to be installed in wet areas of homes such as laundry rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and other similar locations that may be prone to electrical shocks caused by moisture. Therefore, it is necessary to check your home and see if it has any GFCI outlets installed.

2. Turn Off the Power

1) Make sure to turn off the power at the fuse or circuit breaker.
2) Remove the wall plate before using a tester, and ensure the power is shut off already.

3. Remove the disused electrical outlet

1) Remove the existing electrical outlet which the GFCI plug will replace, and take it out of the circuit box.
2) It will expose 2 or more wires. Check and make sure that the wires do not touch each other and then turn the switch on.
3) Use a tester to identify the wires which are carrying power.
4) Remember and mark those wires, then shut the power off again.

4. Install the GFCI Outlet

The GFCI outlet consists of 2 sets of wires marked as line side and load side. The line side carries the incoming power and the load side distributes the power among additional outlets while also providing shock protection. Connect the power wire to the line side and the white wire to the load set on the GFCI outlet. Secure the connections using a wire nut and wrap them using electrical to tape for extra safety. Now you can connect the ground wire to the green screw on the GFCI plug.

5. Put the GFCI plug back in the box and cover it with a wall plate

Be careful to put the GFCI outlet in to the box and mount the wall plates, finally check if it is installed properly.
