Can LED Lights Cause GFCI Trip

Today we will discuss the topic if LED lights can cause GFCI trip or not. People usually have the doubt, so I decided to share something I know about led lights cause GFCI to trip. As far as we know, led lights are very good for your home for the reason they can save more money than you will spend on purchasing them.  And they do not only save money but also energy efficiency. The second thing is that there are different types of led lights that you can choose the one you love for your home.

Yes! Both CFL and LED lights can cause GFCI to trip.  GFCI has been an important safety device installed in many homes and offices that prevent electrical shock and fires for many years. GFCI is designed to detect all kinds of problems in electrical wiring and grounding and signals the power supply to shut off the power once it the problem is detected. This is very helpful for preventing electrical fires and electrocution.

From the first beginning, GFCI was designed to trip when it finds any difference in the current traveling from the hot wire to the neutral wire.  The current traveling from the hot wire to neutral wire is very small because both CFL and LED lights have a very low resistance. This is the reason GFCI trips when these lights are plugged in.  You can try solving the problem by installing a Faith Electric GFCI with a higher sensitivity level. To try a GFCI adapter that filters low-level electrical impulses is also one option.

LED lights consume a lot of power and can trigger GFCI on a circuit, but the more important consideration is the installation itself. If the faulty wiring in the box happens, or if the electrical box is damaged, it is probably not correct for the load on the circuit. Calling a licensed electrician is a good idea. Probably the circuit breaker that caused the GFCI to trip may have been tripped for some reason that won’t cause a problem with the LED light.  The electricians will examine the integrity of the electrical box and the wiring, and ensure that everything is OK before he can install a GFCI protected light.

What would cause a GFCI to keep tripping?

GFCI trips when it senses a change in the device’s resistance or in the current passing through it. This happens when there is a fault in the device or in the power supply. This is the primary protection against electrical shock. When there is a fault in the facility, you will need to check the GFCI and the wiring. It could be caused by a short or a loose connection and in some cases, it might be due to a faulty device.

Can a bad light switch cause a GFCI to trip?

Yes, a bad light switch can cause GFCI to trip in two situations.  Firstly, a bad light switch might cause GFCI to trip when it is in the “ON” position.  It happens when the switch gets stuck in the “ON” position. If the switch is stuck in the “ON” position, the GFCI will be tripped every time when the light is turned on. Secondly, bad light switch can cause GFCI to trip when the switch is in the “OFF” position.  It happens when the switch gets stuck in the “OFF” position. If the switch is stuck in the “OFF” position, the GFCI will be tripped every time the light is turned off.

What to do when lights trip?

A circuit breaker tripped in a home is a common occurrence.  The lights will go out and you will not be able to turn them back on if the breaker trips. This interruption in service will last until you reset the circuit breaker. If you’re wondering what you should do when the lights trip, you can just reset the circuit breaker.

Can a LED light bulb cause a short circuit?

Experts say LED light bulbs can cause a short circuit when mixed with CFL light bulbs. Also, when the power supply to the LED light bulbs is weak, they might cause fire when in mixed with CFL light bulbs. However, when mixed with CFL light bulbs, the worst situation is both the CFL light bulbs and LED light bulbs will fail to work. This is because LED light bulbs do not use halogen gases as traditional light bulbs do.
